Selingan Island is world's famous for its Turtle Conservation project. It is a must visit for anyone who is stopping by at Sandakan. Just 40km away from Sandakan Town, the island is reachable in 50 minutes during good weather. Turtles come up to the shore on nightly basis to lay eggs throughout the year. Visitors have the opportunity to observe a turtle laying eggs, transplanting of the eggs and the releasing of the hatchling to the sea. Of course, there are certain time of the year the turtle will not be able to come up to the shore to lay eggs especially during the drought and during bad weather. Nevertheless, just to see the hatchlings release to the sea is a great experience. The program for the trip is as follows: Day One Transfer from the airport/hotel to the jetty for departure to Selingan Island by boat. The journey will take approximately one hour during good weather condition. On arrival at the island, a briefing about the island and the activities available will be conducted by your guide. After lunch, it is free and easy. You may spend the time swimming or snorkelling in the sea, sunbathing on the beach, walk leisurely around the island or simply relax in the room. After dinner, a slide presentation is available prior to the turtle watching activity. On the Ranger’s signal, you will be directed to the site where a turtle laying eggs has been spotted. Once the signal has been given, you need to rush to the site in order to catch a glimpse of the turtle laying its eggs in the pit. This process takes only minutes at time so the need to hurry. Afterward, the translocation process of the eggs will commence. Witness also the release of the turtle hatchlings back to the sea. (L/D) Day Two After breakfast, return transfer to Sandakan by boat. Upon reaching the jetty, transfer to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Enjoy a leisurely walk to the feeding platform along a wooden boardwalk in the midst of the virgin forest to view the feeding of the orangutan at 10.00am. Afterward catch the flight back to Kota Kinabalu or back to your hotel.
