This is short a cruise-cum-excursion with a visit to the Gharapuri island nicknamed Elephanta island by the Portuguese who landed here in the 16CAD and spotted a life-size stone elephant at the foot of the hill. The cruise starts at the Gateway of India & takes you right into the heart of the harbor to give you an idea of the sea trade activity started by the British and still going strong. With tankers and ships anchored there and a multitude of fishing & ferry boats, all with their individual colored flags make a pretty picture. In the middle of the Mumbai harbour lies your destination - the tiny Elephanta island, housing a jewel of monolithic archeology –a rock-cut cave temple with beautiful rock sculptures dating 6CAD-8CAD, dedicated to Lord Shiva – the redeemer of the hindu trinity. The island has a population of less than 1000 people who were the original fisher folk still seen in their traditional attire though today most of them make a living through tourism.
