Monastery complex spread on about 25 hectares was founded by One of thirteen Assyrian fathers in the desert, near the border of Azerbaijan, in the first half of VI century. The complex includes cells, churches, chapels, refectories and living quarters hollowed out of the rock face. The area is also home to protected animal species and evidence of some of the oldest human habitations in the region. Cave Monastery complex was the centre of Georgian original style fresco writing, manuscript rewriting and translation.
